The piece is a study in painted glaze using a ceramic water vessel as the “canvas.” In all of the conversation about the border lands: the culture, the people, the politics–I believe one unifying factor that we must always keep in our minds is the availability and use of water. The use of color in the original work, which I duplicated on the vase, is as vibrant and varied as the cultures of the desert. The image of the man struggling with the giant fish is a metaphor not only to remind us of the water but also of the life it gives and on a more subtle note the economic impetus to “bring home the bacon” or in this case–giant fish, that sustains the fragile economy of border towns as well as former mining towns.
